Paul and I were partners in business, before we even moved to Tucson. We couldn’t act on it at first, and when the time finally came to officially start Groundwork Promotions, I was not able to be out in the open and public about it. So we worked together, founding the company with the process of Self-Creation and putting together a system of marketing and promotions to guide our clients. Even though we were partners from the beginning, we did not officially become partners until a couple of years later. Media creation has always been a passion of both of us. Paul started doing media in college, when he founded a student Club called Kramerica (in honor of Seinfeld). He would make hilarious media and share it with friends and family on social media. He even had orange Kramer hair, which is hard to believe knowing him now. But when we met, we were like kids with social media. I was 35 and had an account on every platform, teaching myself.
Being a partner with Paul has been stressful and rewarding. He and I share much in common, but we are also very different. I am more ambitious and a go-getter in the present moment, where his ambition is more laid back and he enjoys taking his time. In the beginning, this used to really bother me, but I learned something pretty quickly. Paul’s intuition to take more time often paid off. It kept us from entering into a bad situation, or it kept us from doing work that would never be used. We had one client, who ended up scrapping an entire project and starting over, and we would have spent hours completing it for nothing, if Paul had not taken extra time.
Partnership is one of the greatest experiences of one’s life, if you have the right partner. What I have learned through my partnership with Paul is: Each of us has strengths. Each of us has invaluable assets and when we work together, we can accomplish amazing things. The trick is learning how to work together. Because the interaction with each other can change your life in ways you don’t see coming. It can mean exponential growth and maturity. It can mean long-lasting friendship and success.
