Competition can be fun. It can be strengthening to your mind. It can be challenging to your body and training. Competition can be rewarding to us as all levels, and enable us to grow and change in ways we could never imagine. But competition can also be something that harms us, especially if it happens in a situation or by people who are “out to win” at any cost. When I started doing social media, blogs, and web design about 20 years ago, things were so different. I remember my first Facebook account, right when they opened up to everyone and not just college students. I could stay in contact with my community, my neighbors, my family, my hometown, my college classmates, and my coworkers. I would follow local businesses, celebrities, public figures, movies, or peoples’ causes because I wanted to show support and keep up-to-date on news. I kept in touch with people from my past, people in my present, and even had some strangers I met and connected with because of like-interests. We had a martial arts school ourselves, which we promoted. It was a fantastic experience.
Social media is not like this anymore. It is a whole new world. And in business, competition has moved to the web, to online communication, and to social media. I could use Facebook and feel safe in the past, and feel good about the experience. Now, I have to watch my back and my health. Competition in the industry, competition in business, competition in your community, and any kind of mal-intent finds its way online just like anywhere else, and changes the entire experience.
