It takes knowing it, feeling it, that really kind of transcends that normal gym feel. Sweating, sometimes bleeding with people, in this environment is drastically different. There is nothing else you could compare it to, unless you truthfully have experienced it.

Even though my first professional experiences with combat training and combat gyms ended painfully, my work there “transcended the normal feel.” When you are training, you are not thinking about your age, your size, your shape, your race, your religion, your gender, or anything but the experience. “Sweating, sometimes bleeding with people,” bonds you to them. You share training together in a sacred space. You engage with one another and trust one another, and protect each other as you are learning very difficult and sometimes dangerous movements. The hours of training you put in, the skills you gain, the focus and drive you approach it with, create a situation that cannot be compared to anything else. There is truly nothing like it.

Marketing, promotions and media creation are often like this, when we allow ourselves to face and challenge ourselves. We are stepping on the mat with ourselves, getting into the ring with ourselves, and letting ourselves speak from a place that rarely gets heard. We are Self-Creating the entire time, “sweating and bleeding” with ourselves, getting to know ourselves, and allowing ourselves to creatively and honestly express what brings us to work every day, what makes us work so hard, what makes us train so hard, and what makes us not give up when things are difficult. We approach media creation as a time and opportunity for you to share with people, why what you do is “beyond the normal feel.” What makes you unique, what makes your brand stand out, what makes your instruction high quality. If we can bring that out, we consider our work a success.

If I am honest, my training over a decade ago was always a transcendent feel. Grappling, kicking, punching, sparring and getting to know people in the most intimate levels possible through combat. You cannot compare it to anything else. I also feel this “sensation of intimacy” when working with clients because I listen to them and absorb their words and perspective on their life and what they do. I feel their passion, their lived experience, their years of challenges, and their vision for the future. And in the moment, listening to them, engaging with them, discovering who they are and knowing how to apply that information and create and execute for them, is truly rewarding.
