One of our first videos with a nonprofit was for Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services. I remember making this video vividly, watching the girls tell their stories. When you interview someone, you ask many questions and some answers are better than others. Sometimes you get a great answer and their facial expressions are not as flattering. Other times, their faces and bodies look great, and their answers are not the best. So directing the person is important and often challenging, and then once you have the footage, you go through the b-roll and find the right combination of audio and video files to put together. You want to make each young woman look and sound their best.
When you interview young women who are facing tremendous obstacles (challenges) at a young age, you become absorbed in their stories. I remember telling Paul that I wanted to protect them, all of them. I wanted to keep harm away from them and make sure, the “sky stayed the limit for them.”
Recently my father died and I ended up simultaneously going through the most challenging and scariest event of my life. I had no male guardian or protector, who could understand my situation. I am so used to being the protector, but in this particular situation, I needed help. So I approached my father-in-law to be a male protector, since he had experiences that could help my situation. It was a significant moment for me, asking for help.
These young women were fearless asking for help. They were fearless when making the video. They were fearless for being honest about their situations. And they were so lucky to have support, guidance and protection from an organization like TOPS when they found themselves pregnant.
