What does it mean to run a successful business? What does it mean to be a successful professional? I ask these questions in my own life, because success can be measured in so many ways. When Paul and I met, we discussed success often. So many people base the idea of success on money (your total revenues) or notoriety (how well-known you are), but we also want success at a different level. We want to feel good about ourselves. We want to feel good physically. We want to go home at night and have good relationships. We want friendships and close ties to our community. And we want to be great human beings. Paul says, he wants “Groundwork Promotions to be a force of good in the world,” which means We are a force of good. We prioritize this.
I have spent years working on the idea of health. I started meditating on this idea in my early 30s. I created a company name (which we modified for Groundwork Promotions) and the name kept me thinking about health. For me, health was something comprehensive, all-encompassing. I wanted my life and body aligned, all working towards health at every level. I wanted good physical health, mental health, emotional health, spiritual health, financial health, professional health, familial health, marital health, etc. I did not want to compromise one level, for another. I wanted to nurture and care for them all.
Paul and I bring this perspective to our work. When you talk to us about your company, or organization, or your own professional aspirations, we are always thinking about health and success more comprehensively. We want you to have more revenues, but not at the expense of mental health. We want you have to a greater network of customers, clients and community members, but not at the expense of your safety online. We want you to bring in new business, but not at the expense of your financial well-being. We want everything for you, without compromising your overall health and well-being. This is what we do and it is so much a part of who we are and we don’t want to ever give it up.
So Groundwork Promotions could always be bigger, making more money, having more clients, and taking on more work and travel. But if doing this, meant giving up what is meaningful to us, we would have to think long and hard about it. Because preserving what is meaningful is what we prioritize, not giving it up. We don’t want to compromise.
